The AC556A-R2 Multimedia (VGA/Audio) over CATx 2-Port Dual-Access Extender Kit by Black Box, comprised of a local transmitter unit and a remote receiver unit, allows you to broadcast VGA computer video and stereo audio up to 500′ from the host computer over a CATx cable (CAT5 or higher). The video resolution goes up to 1024 x 768. The extender supports 2 local and 2 remote VGA monitors and features audio outputs for plugging in, for instance, a pair of speakers next to each of the 4 monitors. The AC556A-R2 takes the left and right channels of a stereo signal input on the local unit, sends them to the audio outputs, where they are “mixed” together to form a mono signal before transmitting to the remote unit via CATx.
An LED lights on the local unit when the extender detects a VGA input signal and on the remote unit when it properly decodes VGA signals for the two VGA ports. The remote unit features an equalization (gain) selector switch. To fine-tune the images, adjust this switch to match the length of the CATx cable between the units. A 2kV avalanche diode provides electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection. Typical digital signage applications of this extender include exhibits, retail, trade shows, and airports.
